| On Saturday, May 5th, the Hattiesburg AIDS Services Coalition will be hosting its 5th Annual Walk for Life– Steppin' Out for A Cause 2007. The annual fundraiser and awareness event adds a new option this year – a 5k Run. *Steppin' Out for Cause 2007* will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church at 509 West Pine Street. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. The Run will start at 8:30 a.m.; the Walk at 9:00 a.m. The Walk requires no entrance fee, but participants are encouraged to help raise monies for the Coalition through obtaining pledges. Prizes will be awarded for largest contributors. A $25 registration fee will be collected for the Run and will include a t-shirt and goodie bag. In addition, t-shirts will be on sale on the day of the event. Southeast Mississippi Rural Health Initiative will be on hand for HIV testing and information and referral services. In addition, Representatives of the American Red Cross, Pine Belt Mental Health, and Mississippi Department of Health will join the AIDS Services Coalition in providing outreach, education and prevention materials. Friends for Life, a group of people concerned about the spread of AIDS and willing to do something about it, will be at hand as well. Beejee Dickson, volunteer coordinator of Friends for Life, said, "We will be there to make new Friends and sell AIDS awareness jewelry designed specifically for us by local artist Susan Carruth. The monies raised from jewelry sales go directly to serving the needs of those in our area living with HIV/AIDS – examples include utility assistance and prescription assistance The AIDS Services Coalition (ASC) was founded in 2003 to provide transitional housing and supportive services for homeless people with HIV/AIDS. In addition, the ASC helps fill a significant void as an outreach facility and network to provide information to the community on homelessness and HIV prevention.
