The 36th annual Day in the Park race was held in Laurel on May 3, 2008 with a good group of runners—especially considering the weather. An hour before race time the rain was falling in what looked to be a severe thunder storm, but right before race time the rain stopped. After a few instructions from long time race director Bill McMullan, Judge Charles Pickering offered a prayer and gave the signal to start. This is a very challenging course with several hills; however, Justin Bynum had no problems cruising to an easy win with a time of 19.07. The race for second place was very close with Jason Bright edging out fellow Gulf Coast runner Billy Ray Davis. Bright and Davis were the Masters and Grand Masters winners. Another old man Keith Barrett came in next. Serina Williamson was the first female finisher for the first time in her running life. Her only disappointment was that her father, Dennis, was not there to see it, but her mother and most of the family were present. Jinx Campell was the female Masters and Dee Rasberry took Grand Masters honors. This race is always somewhat of a family affair. In addition to the large number of Wargels, we also had several Badleys, Martins, Armours, and other families. Mike Maslanka ran in his 31st Day in the Park race today, which is a remarkable feat (feet also). Much thanks to the LPD, LFD, and other volunteers for making the course safe. Also the Magnolia State Bank was here again with towels, pedometers, and good food and drink. The Laurel Arts League is to be commended for making this race a success. The happiest person was Beth Thompson, who is retiring from race work after today. Complete results will follow as soon as I get them.
