Run From The Sun

The 5th Annual Run From The Sun 5K Run/Walk and 1-mile fun run was held in downtown Jackson on April 12, 2008.  The event included a 5K run, 5K walk and 1-mile fun run and was organized by the Leonard E. Warren Melanoma Foundation.  More than 500 people between runners, walkers, and friends were present at 5:30pm in front of Clarion-Ledger in downtown Jackson. The race began on Congress Street and winded through downtown streets and back to The Clarion-Ledger with a huge climb around mile 2.  Four Pine Belt Pacers were present at the race.  Nestor Raul Anzola crawled the 5K run whereas his wife, Liliana, and sons, Andres and David, participated in the 1 mile fun run.  I struggled during the whole race and finished in 23:30, the WPR (Worst Personal Record) in years.  However, I learned my lesson.  Definitely, if I ever do 2 races in one day in the future, one walking and one running, the 'running' will be the one in the morning and the 'walking' the one in the afternoon.  For some reason, my legs are sore very much today.  It feels as I had run a whole marathon (?).  My kids had a great time running the mile.  Nobody placed but who cares!.... we enjoyed the afternoon in Jackson.  The event included a free melanoma skin cancer screening that was conducted before the race.  In addition, many door prizes were given away after the race.  All profits from the event will be used to fund Melanoma awareness efforts and to help medical researchers search for a cure. © Pijume Diwesi
