Crystal Springs, June 28

The 2008 Tomato Festival 5k Run/Walk was held in Crystal Springs on Saturday, June 28 with 188 people participating in the 5K Run/Walk and one mile. After a few instructions from MTC's Jack Ward, we were off and running. Mark Elliot took the early lead, but he couldn't hold off fifteen year old William Kazery, who won with a time of 16.31. Elliot was second and took the Masters award with a time of 17.32. The next two finishers were also part of the Kazery family with seventeen year old Peter finishing third with a time of 18.34 and eighteen year old Thomas finishing with 18.59. Yolanda Brown was the first female finisher. Laura Callaway was the female Masters winner. Pine Belt Pacers Phillip Wedgeworth and Amy Keywood took Grand Masters honors. Amy's worst half, Jerry, was working the race while recovering from surgery. The Pacers were also represented by Ray, Jennifer and Bo Henderson, Frank Barrett, and Neil Solomon; all of whom placed in their age groups. Former Pine Belt Pacer President Tony Mozingo didn't run, but he did drive by in his truck after the race to observe. This race has some unique awards with trophies topped with tomatoes. After the race, we enjoyed plenty of good cold watermelon, which reminds everyone of the Watermelon Festival 5K in Jackson on July 4th.
