The 2008 Governor's Cup was held on November 22 in a cool downtown Jackson with a somewhat smaller crowd than the Governor's Cup of old. Of course in the old days, this was a five mile race, and now it is a 5K, but one thing remains the same. I have been going to the race for years, and I have never seen a governor present. My journey to Jackson was almost as interesting as the race. I left Laurel early with the temperature at 26. I thought that would change and it did. By the time I stopped in Smith County, the temp was 22. When I went into the curb store, I noticed that I had made a fashion mistake. Everyone else had on boots and hunting gear. Also I was about the only one there without a 4-wheeler behind my vehicle. When I got to Jackson, the temp had warmed a little, but the breeze made it feel just as cold. I knew it was cold when Mark Lipking had on a shirt; however, two other people were running shirtless. And one of them, William Kazery, won with a fast 16.02. Dale Griffin was second with 16.56. Teresa Crothers was the female winner. Bryan Lagg, running with two stress fractures in his foot, was the Masters winner, and Chanatey Steen was the female Masters. Mark Lipking is still enjoying being an "old Man" and winning the Grand Masters; the female Grand Masters winner was Barbara Poole. The last time I ran a race at this location, the police led us the wrong way. I noticed that every policeman had a map of the course lying on his vehicle. This time only one person to make a wrong turn simply was not paying attention. I won't call his name, but a big hint is that he has run 50 races so far this year. The winning race walkers were Caesar Hamilton and Monica Thompson. Glyn Trigg and Pam Nazary were the Masters winners, and William Stolfzfus and Debra Kinser were the Grand masters winners. After the race we enjoyed plenty of good food and drink. Much thanks to the Mississippi Track Club for another great race. Also a big thanks to the Jackson Police force for making this a safe run.
