The annual Watermelon Classic, Mississippi Track Club's biggest event, was held on July 4 in Jackson with nearly 1500 people participating in all of the events. Nearly 900 were runners in the 5K. This was the typical hot, humid day for this race. We started late because so many people showed up late. We lined up on Lakeland Drive and got going about ten minutes late. After a few instructions from Jack Ward, we were off and running. Caleb Hammons won by three seconds over the second place finisher. Hammons' time was 16.34. Mark Elliot traveled over from Meridian to take the Master's award, and Bassfield's Jeff Hathorn was only two seconds behind Elliot to take the Grand Master's title. Krissy Ford was the first female finisher with a 19.43. Teresa Crothers won the Masters with a 21.45, but her training partner, coach and husband ( I am not sure of the order), Cullen, needs knee surgery; and Teresa will have to go it alone for a while. Mary Lohernz won the female Grand Master's title. David Smalley continued his habit of winning race walks, finishing the 5K in 26.43. Elizabeth Howard was the female winner. Since Nester Raul Anzola, the fastest Colombian in Hattiesburg, wasn't around to defend his costume title, three young ladies dressed in watermelon garb won the costume award (see picture). In addition to the usual awards, every award winner got a Watermelon Classic cap. Other than Jeff Hathorn, Phillip Wedgeworth and Justin Bynum were present to represent the Pine Belt Pacers. Since all of the fast old guys stayed home, Phillip was able to place third in his age group even though he ran over two minutes slower than last year. Laying off two months trying to get over an injury can certainly pack on the pounds and slow a person down. One of the best things about this race is that it is an event, not just a race. I enjoy visiting with people from all over. The Vicksburg people always have plenty of food and beverages and are willing to share. One of the Vicksburgians (or are they called Vicksburgers) who has plenty of beer wants to remain unnamed, but he might be a lawyer named Mack. The organizers have plenty of watermelon for everyone and other refreshments. This is definitely a fun event. Much thanks to everyone who works so hard every year to make this race so great.
