On Saturday, September 4, I traveled to Jackson for the Run For The King 5K sponsored by Christ the King Catholic Church. I knew I was in trouble when arriving and Jack Ward told me that I should get in my car and travel on up to another run that was in Madison. The only problem with that idea was that the Madison run started at 7:30, and I didn't have time to get there. This may not have been the most disorganized race that I have ever attended, but it is in the top two. The other one was the first Legal Beagle that I attended; however, my good friend and attorney Henry Davis told me that I should not expect any better from a bunch of lawyers. The Run for the King people gave me the last race shirt, which was a 2X size, but I thought, "Hey, I can use it for a tent for my whole family." I got my race number and started looking for restroom facilities only to be told that there were none yet, but maybe some portable ones would arrive, and they did shortly before race time. When the race started, we followed the lead vehicle, a Jackson Police Officer, and soon found ourselves off course. Luckily Cullen Crothers came on his bike and got us back on course. The first thirty or so runners ran 3.25 miles instead of the usual 5K of 3.1 Louis Jones took the early lead and won easily with Clare Ayala coming in second and taking top female honors. Brakley Monk and I were the second and third male finishers. Teresa Crothers and Lindsey Johns were the second and third female finishers. Awards were given to the first three males and females with no Masters, no Grand Masters, and no age group winners. I know why I didn't see many of the usual people at this race. I can't remember how many years it has been since Mark Lipking wasn't present at a MTC event. There were some good points about this race. The weather was wonderful and the bananas were good. I am usually not negative, but I don't recommend that anyone put this race on the calendar for next year.  Complete results are linked. © Phillip Wedgeworth
