South Central Race Report

The third annual South Central 5K Classic was held on Saturday, September 20 with about 80 people participating. The day was warm and muggy, but everyone seemed to enjoy it. After a few instructions from race director Justin Bynum, and a prayer by Frank Barrett, we took off up Beacon Street and over to Fifth Avenue and then going over to Sixth Avenue and running up and down the hills for a mile and a half of the course. Terry Lawhead and Margaret Anne Moore returned to take the overall male and female for the second year in a row. Terry finished in 18.24 and Margaret Anne finished in 22.00. Bobby Ray Davis traveled up from the Coast to take the Masters with a 20.15, and Teresa Crothers came down from Brandon to win the female Masters with a 22.34. Hometowners Phillip Wedgeworth and Diane Thames took Grand Masters honors for the second year in a row finishing fifth and fourty-second with times of 22.03 and 29.52. It was good to see so many first timers at this race and I hope that they will make running local races a habit; we need everyone to participate. After the race everyone enjoyed fruit, cookies, soft drinks, and water. Justin Bynum and all of his helpers are to be commended for doing such a great job with this race. Also a special thanks goes out to the Laurel Police Department and Laurel Fire Department for making sure that everyone was safe during the run.
