5K for Relay
April 25, 2009

What a great day for a race! The weather was perfect, the turnout was good, and a lot of money was raised for a great cause. This is the second year for 5K for Relay which benefits the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. With the economy the way it is and everyone’s pocketbook hurting, we still managed to exceed our goal and raise over $5,000. How about that $5K for 5K!

There was a nice turnout of cancer survivors, many who participated in the race. 133 people crossed the finish line with the Pacers’ very own Terry Lawhead winning the race.

For many, this was their first 5K including Marty Van Deusen who brought up the rear. She did so with her head held high and everyone in attendance cheering her across the finish line. Miss Marty is 58 years old and physically challenged. She had been training for this event since January but had yet to ever do more than 2 miles…until now! The smile on her face (and everyone else’s) when she crossed the line was unforgettable. Thank you Miss Marty for being an inspiration to everyone.

A big thanks also goes to Hattiesburg Eye Clinic of Petal and Dr. Johneen Gilich for their generous support. Thanks to all of the Pacers who participated and volunteered. A special thanks to Kristin Pratt and Becky Ryder for all their hard work and commitment to making this a successful event. Mayor Carl Scott and the Petal Police Department deserve a big shout out for making the course clean, beautiful, and safe. To all of the Asbury UMC community who participated and volunteered, you were truly amazing.

Next year is promising to be even bigger and better because the wheels are already turning in my head on how to improve. If you didn’t participate this year there’s always next year so mark your calendars now! May 1st 2010, 5K for Relay, hope to see you there!

Race Report for 5K for Relay 4/25

Neil Solomon

An excellent course which my Garmin had at 3.1 miles.  A little warm but a nice course.  Congratulations to Terry Lawhead for another overall win.

Also a special congratulations to my wife, Jill who took another 2 minutes off an ran a 25:59 and  won the grandmaster division.  As usual Richie Sumrall and I ran the whole race shoulder to shoulder, with me setting the pace, and he outkicked me at the end this time.  We each had PR with Richie at 19:35 and me at 19:37, this head to head battle is pushing us to PR's. Richie won the Masters and I won the Grandmaster and overall we were 2 and 3. Next race I am going to let him set the pace for us. The race was well attended with 135 runners with good goody bags and awards.

I almost didn't go to this race but I'm glad I did because it was a lot of fun. I didn't pre-register so I didn't receive a tee-shirt but the goody bag had nice stuff (travel toothpaste, toothbrush, a travel packet of wet wipes, key chain, and a ribbon). There was tons of food after the race including donuts (all different kinds) and pizza. I didn't anticipate running very fast. I've been having problems with side stitches and ate a bunch of birthday cake the night before. I made sure I started slow and was doing well until my car key fell out of the little bag that attaches to my shoe and I had to go back for it. Luckily I heard it hit the ground and noticed right away. That bag has gone on several runs with me, all longer than 3 miles, and that has not happened before so I don't know what happened but I won't use that zippered pocket again. Anyway, I picked up the key and tried to get back in the groove. The sunny stretch before the last turn got a little warm and I felt like my head was baking but I didn't slow down too much and finished with a PR of 24:18, which was 3rd in my age group. The prize was a three-sided clock with the name of the race below the clock and the other two sides with frames for photos.
