Chevron Charity 5K |
The 2009 Chevron Charity 5K was held in Pascagoula on Saturday, June 13 with about 250 people participating in the 5K Run/Walk and one-mile run. This was a very warm (almost hot) humid day for a race. We lined up on Beach Blvd. and waited for Leonard's instructions, which were fairly simple. We ran over a mile down the beach, turned right, ran one block and finished in the park near where we had started. Leonard Vergunst was the overall winner with a good time of 17.56. Fifteen year old Katie Bodin was the first female with a time of 21.36. Kevin McDonald and Lu Jeffery were the Masters winners. David Jeffery, Lu's husband, and Nancy Phillips were the Grand Masters winners. Ken Freeman, who just recently became a "very old man," won the Senior Grand Masters. The Pine Belt Pacers were well represented at the race. The entire Henderson family did very well. Ray was first in his age. Jennifer was the second female race walker, and Bo won his age group in the one-mile. Phillip Wedgeworth, who ran his first race in over six weeks since falling from a ladder, won first place in his age group. After the race we enjoyed plenty of fruit and liquid refreshments. The Gulf Coast Running Club did another great job with this race. The course was accurate, the results were completed in a timely fashion, and the early registration cost of $13.00 was a bargain. Much thanks to Leonard, Denise, Terry and all of the gang for putting on quality races. See results. See pictures. © Phillip Wedgeworth |
