The Legal Beagle, sponsored by the Jackson Young Lawyers' Association, was held on Saturday, March 14 with 350 people who did not have enough sense to stay out of the ran participating in the 5K race/walk and one-mile run. I left Laurel at 5:00 a.m. in a light rain with Peggy. She gave up years ago questioning the sanity of me and other runners, who go out every Saturday in all kinds of weather and run races. When we got to the race site, we picked up our race materials and for the first time the Mississippi Track Club used the new computer chips for timing. We warmed up and got ready for the race. Jack Ward gave the usual instructions with warnings about water on the course, and then we were off and running. Dale Griffin (it has taken some work, but I have finally trained Dale to not look stupid when posing for photos with the winner's award) was the overall winner with a time of 16.55. He was followed by Jerry White and Rob Oates. Chrisitie Barber was the first female finisher. Even though her last name is pronounced the same as our governor's, no one would confuse the two. Ruth Maron and Beverly Bower were the second and third female finishers. Robert Ross and Teresa Crothers were the Masters winners. Mark Lipking and Mary Lohrenz were the Grand Masters winners, and Curtis Kynerd and Cathy Ward were the Senior Grand Masters winners. David Smalley and Elizabeth Howard were the winners in the race walk. Lance Cooper and Carolyn Graham were the Masters winners in the walk, Charlie Montague and Tina Brannon were the Grand Masters winners, and Harold Lee and Emily Lee were the Senior Grand Masters winners. Many people won door prizes ranging from caps to $100.00 gift certificates, but as usual I was not one of the door prize winners. I am not even sure they should be called door prizes since we were outside and there were no doors. We also had plenty of good post race food to enjoy. We had bagels from Beagle Bagle, lots of cookies, fruit, and soft drinks. Since this event was sponsored by lawyers, there was a bar present. Thanks to the Mississippi Track Club for another quality Grand Prix event. Complete results. © Phillip Wedgeworth See Pictures |
