Pine Belt Pacers Relay 2009, by Jen Torres 6/6/2009

The day dawned clear and cool, but quickly got up to the normal summer temps of mid 80’s. Low humidity and plenty of sunshine ruled the day and made for perfect weather for the Relay. I did not participate but was part of the volunteer team and was the “official” photographer. There were five teams; The Bulls, The Masters and Baby Jim, The Bells and Whistles, the Leftovers and the Pirates. Each team had 4 to 6 members and had to have at least one female. I think The Bulls bullied their way to first place! Typical of Keith! Nestor’s team, The Leftovers, almost had to do a mid-event replacement when their illustrious captain took a rather spectacular spill at the finish line. My camera was not even fast enough to record him as he flew over the line determined to get on the podium. He left a bit of skin on the track, but wore his war wounds rather proudly for the rest of the race! There were all kinds of activities; running, jumping, throwing and flying. Flying? Yes Flying in the steeplechase. That was fun to watch! There were plenty of snacks (thanks Susan!) and drinks from Coke, ice-cream from Bops and some nice prizes from City Runners.  Audrey and Charles did a magnificent job with the event. And thanks to USM for lending us the Track and Field Complex! Next year I will absolutely participate. I just won’t plan a half marathon for the very next weekend!
