Race Report by Ginny Dufrene I had a great day too. I kept debating whether to go to Pensacola because the weather was not as cold as I wanted, but my desire to run the race won out. I didn't do any warm-up, it was drizzling rain and I didn't want to get wet until I had to. I started the race and felt good, going too fast, trying to slow down, and get on pace. First 2 miles were fast, but not too bad, then I settled in to roughly 8:20 pace for most of the miles except mile 8 which had a long, big hill. This mile was 8:40 and it was followed by 2, 8:32 miles. Normally when I begin my slow down, I do not come back, but today I was able to rebound a little and I finished with 8:26, 8:11, 8:28. I finished with a time of 1:49:58. Very pleased to finally have some improvement over a few seconds. Yeah! I would highly recommend the half marathon. Can't really say about the full. You have to do the same loop again, and I am not sure I would like that, but Raul didn't have any problems with covering the distance 2 times. (Note: his half was much faster than mine, and he was doing the full - Superman!) |
Race Report by Nestor Raul Anzola After a lot of weeks of serious training (last time in my life!), I had a great run in Pensacola. It was a good day to run. The race starts at 6:30 in the morning. I never eat anything before a race specially this early. This year I had the phenomenal idea of eating a beagle with a weird cream half hour before the run. I almost paid the price . When the gun went off, I started fast; however, half mile into the run, my stomach started asking to review today’s menu . I had to stop. Then in the distance I heard a familiar voice (Ginny) asking: NEeeestor, are you OK? – I just managed to answer: Yes, I am Okkkkkkk, HAwaaaiiii Iooooooowa! After I made friends with the ground and fed the birds, I felt much better.
I came back to the course and ran three strong and fast miles trying to make up for some of the time lost. I asked several of the half-marathoners what their planned finish time was until I got into this group of three people who wanted to run the distance in 1:40. As a parasite I just sticked and followed them for the next seven miles! Around mile 11 they went ahead. I crossed the half marathon mark in 1:41:13 (sounds good!). As Ginny said, the full marathon included two loops to the same course. From mile 13 to mile 20 I still managed to run around an 8:08 pace average and crossed the 20m marker in 2:38:17 (still good and hanging there!). However, the long big hill appeared, the one in mile 8, now mile 21. I seriously struggled with it and then started going slower and slower. From mile 20 to 26, I ran around a 9 minutes pace average. Finally, I crossed the finish line in 3:33:28 for a nice PR. Of course, everything in my poor body is hurting today! Congratulations to Ginny for another PR in the half marathon distance! (you rule girl!). Another local runner, one of the Fantastic Four, Dwayne Higgason was doing his debut in the marathon distance. He finished strong in 4:45. Congratulations to him too!! The Pensacola Running Club did a great work directing and managing the event. For example, when I arrived home early in the afternoon, the race results were already posted online (wow!) http://www.pensacolamarathon.com/ |
