Run Thru History 10K - March 7, 2009

The 30th edition of the scenic Run Thru History 10K road race took place in Vicksburg on March 7, 2009.  More than 1,000 runners and walkers participated in the 3 races: 10K run, 5K walk, and 1m fun race.  It was a sunny, hot, and humid Saturday morning to confront this hilly and challenging course.  Jeff Kent was the overall winner in a time of 32:56.  The women race was dominated by Keri Frazier, a Hattiesburg resident, who stopped the clock in 43:36.  A good and complete article on the race can be found in the Sunday edition of the Vicksburg Post http://www.vicksburgpost.com/articles/2009/03/08/sports/doc49b364ac4574f144584815.txt

The Pine Belt Pacers were represented by Leonard Vergunst, Jeff Hathorn, Nestor Raul and Andres Anzola.  Leonard finished fifth overall in 36:28 and broke a 15 year-old record in the grand masters category by 37 seconds.  Behind him came Jeff Hathorn in 37:48 who placed first in his age group.  It was a race dominated for the young grand masters fellows.  In addition to Leonard and Jeff, another familiar face, Jim George, finished in 38:13. These three grand masters guys will make a killer team for the Azalea Trail Run in Mobile on the 28th.  I was also there but after crossing the half mark point in a solid 22:30, I just succumbed to the effects of heat and humidity in the second part of the race.  I had to walk several times and run in training pace motion to be able to finish the 6.2m.  I crossed the end line in 54:04.  My son Andres participated in the 1-mile fun race.  He has not done a lot of running in the last year (in fact, he had not run since the last Run For the Roses event), so he just ran slow and enjoyed the race. © Pijume
