The 2009 Tomato Festival 5K Run/Walk was held on Saturday, June 27 with over 260 people participating in the 5K and one-mile. This was a very hot, humid day and some of us suffered from the heat. The race started and William Kazery easily won with a time of 17.16. His brother Thomas came in second with a 19.03. Bridgett Jolly, sporting a new shorter haircut, was the first female finisher. John Ogletree and Miriam Allred were the Masters winners. Neil Solomon was the male Grand Masters winner by beating Mark Lipking by one second. Amy Keywood was the female Grand Masters for the second year in a row. Bennett Randmon and Elizabeth Joyner were the race walk winners. In addition to Neil Solomon, the Pine Belt Pacers were well represented by Ray, Jennifer, and Bo Henderson and Phillip Wedgeworth. Ray and Phillip were both first in their age groups in the 5K run. Jennifer placed in the race walk, and Bo was first in his age group in the one-mile run. After the race many people jumped into the pool to cool off (see picture of Neil). We also had plenty of watermelon and other fruit. This is just one of the many quality races that the Mississippi Track Club puts on. Next Saturday will be one of the largest of the MTC races with the Watermelon Classic. Last year over 900 people participated and 1000 are expected this year. © Phillip Wedgeworth |
