The Waynesboro Whistle Stop Festival 5K run/walk was held on Saturday April 4 with about 30 people participating. After a few instructions we were off and running. I was a little concerned when one young lady fell at the start, but she jumped up quickly and took off, so I guess she was okay. Ray Henderson took the early lead and had no trouble winning with a time of 20.28 on a failry challenging course. I was second at 21.18, which goes to show that all of the fast people either went somewhere else or stayed home. This turned out to be a day for families. In addition to Ray, Bo Henderson, the Pine Belt Pacer young runner of the year, ran a 24.15; and Mom, Jennifer, was the first race walker to finish the course. Another family present was the Allen family with three members running their first 5K. Fourteen year old Lexus Allen was the first female runner and her mother and brother were first in their age groups in the walk. This was a nice small town race. Thanks to the workers who put it on. I want to extend a special thanks to the Waynesboro Police Department, who made this race one of the safest that I have ever participated in. © Phillip Wedgeworth
