Biloxi Mayor's Cup |
November 21, 2009 - Pictures The annual Biloxi Mayor's Cup was held Saturday, November 21 with 190 people running the 5K and 17 finishing the one-mile run. I have run both the Biloxi Mayor's Cup and the Governor's Cup in Jackson on and off for more years than I care to count and I have always found the Mayor at the Mayor's Cub, but I have never seen the Governor at the Governor's Cup. Maybe the Governor should set a better example for the fattest and least healthy state. We were very fortunate to run the race and have the awards ceremony without getting rained on since the threat of rain was great for the entire morning. After a few instructions from race director, Leonard Vergunst, Mayor Holloway of Biloxi gave the signal to start and we were off and running on the very flat out and back course. This turned out to be a race for youngsters. Fourteen year old Daniel Pratt was the overall winner with a 17.43, and sixteen year old Anna Kate Bodin was the female winner at 20.25. Mark Koch and Tracey Kesterson were the Masters winners, and Bill Gasparrini and Debra Herbert were the Grand Masters winners. The Gulf Coast Running Club also awards Senior Masters winners and they were Paul Oncale and Gini Fellows. Other running clubs need to follow the GCRC lead and give Seniors something to strive for. The Pine Belt Pacers were well represented at this race. Jennifer Henderson and son Bo both placed in their age groups. Robbie Headrick placed in her age group, and Phillip Wedgeworth was first in his age division. After the race we enjoyed plenty of good food including sandwiches, fruit, cookies, beer, soft drinks, sport drinks and water. Thanks to the GCRC for another good race. At coast races we can always expect an accurate course, great awards, good food and plenty of friendly people. Complete results are linked. |
