The third annual JCJC Hall of Fame Bobcat 5K

The third annual JCJC Hall of Fame Bobcat 5K was held on Saturday, September 12 with about 250 participating in the 5K and one-mile fun run.The weather started off with a big question mark. When Neil Solomon arrived, he told me that he had rain on the way up from Hattiesburg, but luckily the rain held off until after the race and awards ceremony were over. After a welcome from Katie Herrington and a prayer by Pat Waldrip, Gwen Magee gave the signal to start. One Jones student jumped out into the lead and held it for a short while before being overtaken by a host of runners. Things soon settled down to a two person race with Matt Johnson taking first with an 18.09 and Mike Thrailkill coming in second and taking the Masters award with an 18.12. Whitney Clark and Katie Herrington took first female and Masters. For the second time in less than a week, Neil Solomon and Robbie Headrick were the Grand Masters winners at a race. The Labor Day race last Monday was the other one. This was a great event with the usual and standard five-year age group winners. After the race people enjoyed plenty of good fruit, good food and drink. Also several people won nice door prizes. Much thanks to all of the Jones people who worked so hard to make this a success.

Former JCJC students claim titles in Bobcat 5K Run

ELLISVILLE – It was not Homecoming on the Jones County Junior College campus Saturday morning, but it sure felt like it for two former JCJC students.

Matt Johnson of Ridgeland and Whitney Clark, now a student at the University of Southern Mississippi, claimed the overall male and female titles, respectively, in the Third annual Bobcat Hall of Fame 5K Run.

Johnson had a personal best time of 18:09, while Clark posted a 20:28. Mike Thrailkill was second for the men with a time of 18:12, while Cara Hyatt was second for the women with a 21:40.

Johnson, who attended Jones from 2000-02, usually competes in triathlons, so Saturday's race was a bit different.

“My last 5K was the Hal and Mal's St. Patrick's Day Run in Jackson,” he said. “I do Olympic-distance triathlons and half-ironmans, so this was a pretty tough effort for me today.

“But this was my best time in a 5K by roughly 25 seconds, so I am really happy with it.”

Clark last ran a 5K last year in the Bobcat 5K. That was when she was a cheerleader at JCJC and she was excited about returning to run on campus.

“I love Jones,” said Clark. “I am always going to come back and support them. I love to run and I do it to stay in shape, basically. If I'm feeling stressed out, I just take a run.”

Johnson, who is a software engineer, complimented the course and was happy a breeze and overcast skies greeted the runners.

“I thought the course was really good and the conditions could have been much worse,” he said. “The humidity could have been worse. It wasn't cool, but it's a typical, Mississippi late summer day.”

Clark, who is majoring in kinesiotherapy at Southern Miss, was also pleased with her time and the conditions for the race.

“I run outside pretty much everyday, so today was nice,” said Clark. “The cooler atmosphere was really good.”

Johnson, whose parents and brother live in Petal, plans on competing in a half-ironman in Augusta, Ga., on Sept. 26.

Clark, a former cheerleader at Northeast Jones and JCJC, had not competed in a 5K Run since last year's Bobcat 5K. She had to do that one because she was a cheerleader at the time.

So, this is her first victory in a 5K. She hopes to participate in more competitive races in the future.

“Usually when I run in these, I do it because I have to,” she said. “I was going to run in the Day in the Park race (in Laurel in May), but I was sick this past year and could not do it. I am hoping to do that one next, unless another one comes up.”

There were around 250 participants in Saturday's race, which was sponsored by the JCJC Athletic Department and directed by Lady Bobcat soccer coach Dolores Deasley.
