Planet Gymnastics 5K
July 18 2009

The Planet Gymnastics 5k was casual race put on as a fundraiser by a group of young local gymnasts. All proceeds went to benefit the Planet Gymnastics Girls Competition Team.

As far as I know the only t-shirt size was extra large. Mine is already in the Goodwill box. I (already) have too many race shirts to keep one that doesn't fit.

The race started pretty close to on time. The runners started and then the gymnasts followed soon after. One girl ran the whole thing in flip-flops! There were volunteers giving out water bottles at the turnaround point. My hrm lost the signal at one point during the race so I'm not sure about my average hr. I was trying to go by hr instead of time because I have been doing more intervals and tempo runs as part of the training for my Labor Day half-marathon. Sometimes my head tells me I am too tired to go any faster when my hr says otherwise.

Anyway, one of the race sponsors was CrossFit so there were plenty of CrossFit guys there looking very serious. I have to say I was happy to pass a few of them. Timing was done by stopwatch. I was very happy with my time of 23:15 (a PR by about a full minute). I didn't win anything because there were only 2 age groups: over or under 35. I believe I was the fourth female to finish but it wasn't officially announced so I don't know for sure. I am happy that my half training is obviously having an effect.

After race treats included water, Powerade, two flavors of smoothies from Smoothie King, and chewy granola bars. They also had little sweat towels. I wrapped mine around a chunk of ice and cooled off in no time. Awards were done in a fairly timely fashion but the announcer was hard to hear. Prizes (t-shirts) were given to the top male and female in the two age groups. Gift cards/ certificates and t-shirts were given to the top 8 overall (which included the 2 top males and females again that won in their age groups). There was also a raffle. The gymnasts received certificates with coupons and reusable water bottles.

All in all a good race but very casual.
