The Watermelon Classic, one of the Mississippi Track Club's grand prix events, was held on Saturday, July 4 with a very nice crowd. The race started at 7:30 on Lakeland Drive with the temperature about 85 in the shade. This is always a very warm, humid race, and the hills never go away. Jeff Hathorn was the only person present who wanted warmer weather, but I am not sure how serious he was about that statement. Jack Ward gave us some instructions and then shot the gun and we were off and running. The course starts on Lakeland near the Ag Museum and then turns onto the frontage road before turning left on Eastover. Then we run through the Research and Development area before returning to Lakeland for the last mile. William Kazery continued his winning ways with a time of 16.46. Heather Droppert was the first female finisher at 19.52. Mark Thorne was the Masters winner at 17.38, and Paula Cole was the female Masters winner at 22.39. Jeff Hathorn was the Grand Masters winner for the second time at 17.42. Of course he has only been an official "old Man" for the last two years. Marion Geissinger was the female Grand Masters winner at 22.11. David Smalley and Tina Brannon were the race walk winners. Nestor Anzola and Caroline Ford were the Masters winners. Additionally Nestor won the costume contest. He walked the course dressed as Lady Liberty (see picture). Bennett Randman and Janice Boersma were the Grand Masters winners. Several other Pine Belt Pacers were also present. Gary Thornton ran well, and Phillip Wedgeworth placed in his age group. After the race we enjoyed plenty of watermelon and other fruit. We also had soft drinks, sports drinks, and water. Several people won nice door prizes. Fleet Feet gave away several pairs of running shoes. Nestor Anzola won a good prize for having the best costume. This is more than a race; it is an event. Everyone should participate at least once. Much thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make this a success. © Phillip Wedgeworth | |
