Pass to Bay 10K |
The annual Pass to Bay 10K was held on Saturday, December 19 with a record number of runners participating. Many of us were surprised at the large number that came out in the cool, very windy weather to run this race. This is a point to point run that starts in Pass Christian and runs to Bay St. Louis. Up until four years ago, this was a very flat fast course, but Hurricane Katrina took out the old flat draw bridge, and the new bridge is about two and a half miles long with much of it going up hill from the east side, which is the side that we ran up. Add to that a very strong head wind, and we had a difficult 2.5 miles. Michael Scott (48 years old) was the first finisher outdistancing the young Leonard Vergunst (54 years old). Leonard took Masters honors. Megan Davis was the female winner. Both male and female winners got a new pair of running shoes from the new running store in Biloxi. Guy Truett was the Grand Masters winner and former Laurel resident Ken Freeman was the Senior Grand Master winner. The Pine Belt Pacers were well represented. In addition to Leonard's Masters, Phillip Wedgeworth won his age group. Robbie Headrick placed in her age group. Rick Youngblood placed in his age group also. Several other area runners were present as well. District Attorney Tony Buckley ran his first 10K, and Mary Fields from Laurel ran well. After the race we enjoyed great food, drink and fellowship. We dined on Subway sandwichs, every runner's favoite doughnuts, cookies, bannas, soft drink, sports drink, water, and beer for the people who know that it is after 5:00 somewhere in the world even if it is 10:00 a.m. on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. This was another great race by the GCRC.
