The first ever Run for Hunger was held in Pascagoula and sponored by the Church on The Rock in Pascagoula. The race was held at Beach Park. We started on the beach and ran for well over a mile and then turned right for two blocks onto Washington Street. From there we returned to the park to finish our 5K. Mike Brown was the overall winner at 18.55, and he did it while pushing a stroller with not one, but two kids in it. After the race, I told Mike that he needs about four more kids so he can slow down to normal speed. The winning female was Stephanie Jones. Guy Truett took Masters honors, and Jinx Campbell was the female Masters winner. Phillip Wedgeworth won the Grand Masters. I want to thank Bill Gasparrini for staying home and having enough sense to stay out of the cold and wind. We really know that he does not have enough sense to stay out of bad weather; he probably just did not know about this race. Erika Sauer was the female Grand Masters winner. The Pine Belt Pacers were also well represented by Ray Henderson who was first in his age group and third overall. This was a first time race, and eighty-one souls braved the cold and wind to complete this race. Several others had preregistered, but they failed to show up and run. After the race we had a variety of food ranging from grilled burgers and hot dogs to doughnuts. This race was a first for me: never before had I chosen coffee as the after-race beverage, but the cool weather forced the decision. As a matter of fact it was so cold that before the race, Leonard told me that my legs were purple. At least that is my wife's favorite color. Much thanks to Terry, Leonard and all who worked hard to make this a success. I am also thankful that the pastor of the Church on The Rock was not injured when he crashed into a tree on the way to the race. Next time save a tree and hit the dog. |
