Run for the SON 08/07/20 |
The annual Run for the Son 5K Run/Walk and one-miler, which is sponsored by the First Baptist Church in Jackson, was held on Saturday, August 7 with almost 700 people participating in all events. The race started at 8:00 on what is possibly the hardest 5K course in the state. According to my Garmin, we had 1726 feet of ascent, which sounds like a lot to me. In addition to the many hills, the temperature and humidity were both very high. However, Caleb Hammons had no trouble with the course and finished first overall with a time of 16:45. Tim Irvine, who has won the Labor Day Race in Hattiesburg four times, was the Masters winner, and Greg Gearhart was the Grand Masters winner. Coral Cruz was the female winner with a time of 20.15. Shannon Carson was the Masters winner and Amy Keywood was the Grand Masters female winner. The Pine Belt Pacers were well represented. Jennifer Henderson was the second overall female race walker and got first in her age group. Ray got third in his age group, and Phillip Wedgeworth was second in his age group. The best thing about this race, in my opinion, is being able to go inside an air conditioned building for the awards and after-race refreshments. The showers are very nice also. If anyone wants a challenging race, this is one to put on the calendar. Complete results are linked. Pictures |
