Tomato Fest 5K

June 26, 2010

The annual Tomato Festival 5K Run/Walk and one-miler was held on June 26 in Crystal Springs with a good size group of participants. We all lined up at 8:00 a.m. on a very hot, humid day and waited for Jack Ward to give us instructions and then we were off and running on this relatively flat course. There are only two hills, which are actually two sides to a bridge. Lucas Sieb had little trouble with the heat and finished first with a time of 16:34. Jody Ogletree, who has lost over 60 pounds since he started running, was the Masters winner, and Jim George, who was the second person over 50 to finish the most recent Boston Marathon, took Grand Masters honors. Bridgett Jolly was the female winner, Shannon Carson was the Masters winner, and Amy Keywood took the Grand Masters. The Pine Belt Pacers were well represented by Frank Barrett, Phillip Wedgeworth, and Jennifer, Ash, Bo, and Ray Henderson. After the race we had plenty of watermelon, bananas, and all sorts of drink. The only bad part was the one person who had to get medical help and was eventually transported by ambulance. This fact should be a warning to be wary of the heat for the next few months.
