Bay Fest

06/04/2010

From Philip Wedgeworth:

The first every Bay Fest 5K Run/Walk and one-mile fun run was held on June 4 with about 180 people participating in all three events. The course had some hills, and the weather was unusually warm for early June, but the runners did not seem to have much of a problem with either the hills or the heat. After a few instructions from Phillip Wedgeworth and a prayer by Reverend Slaughter from the Methodist Church, the Police Chief shot the gun for the start and everyone was off and running. Jonathan Sellers from Livingston, Alabama was the overall winner with a good time of 17:52. Sarah Hinton from Laurel was the first female finisher. In addition to trophies the overall winners received $150.00 each. The Masters winners were Ray Henderson and Vicki Copeland, and the Grand Masters winners were Gary Thornton and Donna Connerly. The Masters and Grand Masters winners each got $100.00. The winning race walkers were Keith Nix and Jennifer Henderson. They also got $100.00 each. The Henderson family did quiet well today. The one-mile fun run male winners were Jack Short, Rustin Freeman and Ethan Crain, and the female winners were Jada King and Jazmine King. After the race everyone enjoyed plenty of good fruit, food soft drinks, water, and sports drink. Heather Brown did a great job organizing this race and she had plenty of help from co-workers at Magnolia Bank, which was the race sponsor. Much thanks to everyone who worked so hard to make this race a success. The Bay Springs PD did a good job keeping everyone safe. The workers were extremely helpful and well organized. Everyone seemed very complimentary about this race. It was the best “first” race that I have every been associated with.
