Magee Crazy Days 5K 09/17/2011 |
The annual Magee Crazy Days 5K Run/Walk and one-mile fun run was held on September 17 with a good group of runners and walkers participating. The event has been around for many years and has changed courses several times over the years, and this year's course was the most challenging yet. The course had numerous turns and hills. There were also several dogs that had me concerned and at least two people reported being stung by bees, so this course had something for everyone. The race started at 7:30. After a prayer and some instructions from the race director, we were off and running. Several young people starting at the front of the pack, but they ran out of gas fast and slowed down dramatically. One young man also started out fast, but about a half mile into the race Phillip Wedgeworth was able to pass him. Obviously no fast males showed up for this event. The Pine Belt Pacers were well represented at this race. Phillip Wedgeworth was the overall male winner. The overall female winner was Melanie Rankin. Pine Belt Pacer member Frank Barrett placed in his age group, and Larry Sykes placed in his age group as well. The was a well organized race. People were standing at all of the turns to keep us on course, and the Magee Police Department did a great job keeping the course safe from traffic. After the race we had plenty of water, sports drink, cookies, and fruit. It was also great to see some old friends that I have not seen in a while. John Hall came over from Prentiss to run. Results have been promised and I will forward them if and when I get them.
