South Group’s Make a Difference One Step at a Time 5K Run/Walk 02/19/2010 |
The third annual South Group’s Make a Difference One Step at a Time 5K Run/Walk to benefit the Children’s Hospital at the University Medical Center was held on Saturday, Feb 19 with over 660 people participating in the 5K run, race walk, and one-mile fun run. This event starts near the offices of the South Group and goes onto County Line Road before winding through the parking lot of North Park Mall and then up and down several hills before it finishes in front of the office building from which it starts. After a few instructions from MTC race director, Jack Ward, we were off and running. The temperature was in the high 60s, which was a big change from last week’s race in Jackson when there was snow on the ground in the shady areas with the temperature hovering around 28 with a strong wind. The warmth was welcome, but the heat is something that we will have to get used to. Griffin Metcalf and Bridgett Jolly were the overall male and female winners. Scott Stringer and Dawn Polo were the Masters winners, and Mark Lipking and Geri Young were the Grand Masters winners. Wayne Gordon and Jennifer Henderson were the overall race walk winners. Dale Stewart and Valerie Ransom were the Masters Winners, and Larry Sykes and Mary Rogers were the Grand Masters winners. In addition to Jennifer and Larry, the Pine Belt Pacers were well represented. Ray Henderson, Bo Henderson, and Ray Martin were third in their age groups, and Phillip Wedgeworth was first in his age group. Jeff Troyka won his age group in the race walk. After the race we had plenty of good food and drink and several people won nice door prizes. This is a great race for a great cause and should be added to everyone’s schedule. Thanks to the South Group and to the Mississippi Track Club for such a well organized event. Complete results are linked.
