2nd Annual Bay Fest 06/02/2012 |
The second annual Bay Fest 5K Run/Walk and one-mile fun run was held on Saturday, June 2 with 225 people registered for all events. The weather was much better than last years. Last year, we had very hot temperatures and high humidity. Today the temp was about 65 at race time and the humidity was not bad. After a few words of instruction and a prayer, we were off and going. George McCord jumped out into the early lead and never had any serious threats. George finished with a time of 18:42, which is very good on a course with several hills. Mark Lipking came in second with a 20.04 and took the Masters award. Genny Gunter finished sixth overall and was the first female finisher with a nice time of 21.15. Shannon Carson was the Masters female winner. Mike Neal and Vickie Alexander, both of Meridian, took the Grand Masters honors. Phillip Wedgeworth and Ellen Kay Rawl were the Senior Masters winners. Mannix McLaurin was the first Jasper County finisher. Nestor Raul Anzola from Hattiesburg and Jennifer Henderson from Waynesboro were the male and female race walk winners. The overall 5K run winners each got a nice trophy and $150.00. All of the others mentioned so far got nice trophies and $100.00 each. The top three males in the one-mile run were Brandon Hinton at 7:25, Ethan Crain at 7:28, and Rusting Freeman at 8:29. The top three females were Candace Crain at 9:14, Alley Gunter, daughter of the overall female winner, at 9:46, and Ashlyn Henderson, daughter of the overall female race walker, at 11:47. This is a great event that is sponsored by Magnolia State Bank with the proceeds going to the Magnolia State Hope Fund for The Good Shepherd Clinic, which serves Jones, Jasper, and surrounding counties. After the race we enjoyed good classical rock music, good food, drink and great fellowship with the runners. Much thanks to Heather Brown and all of the Magnolia State people for make this race a success. |
