Poplarville PTA Blueberry 5K Run

The twentieth annual Poplarville PTA Blueberry 5K run was held on Saturday, June 12, 2004 with over 100 people participating. After a few instructions from race director Steve Herring and a prayer, the Mayor of Poplarville shot the starting gun to start the race. After one misfire, the gun went off, and we started to run. Anthony Stricker, who is under twelve years old, took the early lead and held it for about a half mile until Jeff Hathorn decided it was time to take over the race and leave the rest of us far behind. Jeff had no serious competition and cruised to an easy win. Jerry Worley was the second finisher even though he was over a minute slower than his usual time. As a matter of fact, almost everyone at the race complained about being a minute or two slower than usual. I blamed it on the extreme heat, humidity, and hills. Someone changed the course two years ago to take out the one really big hill, but now we have several medium sized hills; I am not sure which is better. Katie Herrington traveled down from Ellisville with her husband Bob and was the first female finisher. Martha Ray Sartor, Richard Sims and Phillip Wedgeworth also represented the Pine Belt Pacers well.
Thanks to everyone who worked to put this race on. See Results. © Phillip Wedgeworth
