A
large crowd turned out for the October 9th HUBfest 2004, with 107
finishers in the 5K run, and good fields in the walk and 1
mile fun run also. A light rain kept the runners cool as
they toured the course, which goes from Kamper Park, down Mamie to the Historic District and back. The race is the
official 5K Mississippi State Championship and is sanctioned
by the Road Runners Club of America. Runners came from all
over the state to compete. There were quite a few runners
who came up from Camp Shelby to participate.
Awards were given to the top runners overall (stained glass wall hangings by artist Tim Buckner of Laurel), and by age groups (commemorative mugs and certificates). The winners in the walk and one mile run received large trophies. Many nice door prizes were awarded by random drawing. All entrants received a nice looking souvenir t-shirt produced by Upton Advertising Inc. The plaque awarded to the group with the most participants went to an Army Brigade from Camp Shelby. (Actually, probably in order to confuse terrorists, the army folks claimed they were headquartered in one place, stationed in another, and just physically located at Camp Shelby.) The plaque for the school with the most participants went to Presbyterian Christian School (one of their runners also came in first overall). Actually, probably in order to confuse terrorists, the army folks claimed they were headquartered in one place, stationed in another, and just physically located at Camp Shelby. Refreshments were served all the runners after the race while they socialized and waited for results. Water, PowerAde, fruit, bagels, cookies, and soda really hit the spot.
The race was directed by Keith Barrett, (masterminded of course by his wife Debra) and went off flawlessly! Keith was assisted by many Pine Belt Pacers, experts from the Wellness Institute of Sports Medicine, the USM Track team coaches, and many other volunteers, Many thanks to all the people who worked to put on such a fine race. Thanks also to the sponsors who donated money, food and drink, door prizes, and workers. Sponsors included: Coca-Cola, Soccer Locker & City Runners, Hattiesburg Bicycle, Citizens Bank, IWSM, the Pine Belt Pacers, Sports Medicine at Hattiesburg Clinic, TCBY, Subway, The Independent, Steinmart, and Sunbeam. And praise be to God for providing such a nice cool wet day. The proceeds from the race went to benefit those suffering from Muscular Dystrophy.
