The State Games 5K road race was
held Saturday, June 19, at Bonita Lakes
in Meridian with a very good crowd of runners and race walkers. After a
few instructions from long-time race director Harold Keyes and a prayer
by Scott Crenshaw, Harold gave the signal to start, and we were off.
Mike Thrailkilll took the early lead and never looked back. Mike won
easily with a time of 17:16. James Johnson from Meridian was second with
a time of 18:39. As is the trend three of the top four finishers were
over 40, and at lest one of the top ten was over 50. The Pine Belt area
was well represented. Phillip Wedgeworth won the 50-54 age group with a
20:28, and Richard Sims was second with a 21:33. Ray Martin won his age
group 45-49 with a 21:21, and Chuck Gatzman was the winner in the 25-29
age group. This was a very hot race, but luckily the course only sports
one significant hill and a lot of fairly flat land. © Phillip Wedgeworth
