The Mal's St. Patrick's Day 5K run/walk was held in Jackson on Saturday, March 20, with 300 runners, over 80 race walkers, and 37 one-milers. We lined up on North State Street and waited for Jack Ward to give the instructions and shoot the starting gun. Chuck Engle took the early lead and never gave it up to win with a time of 16:54. The Pine Belt Pacers Jerry Worley took Masters honors with a 19:16. Willie Powers from Vicksburg was the Grand Masters winner at 18:45. Tad Jurgens was the senior Grand Masters winner. Kristi Walski was the female winner. Mary Lohrenz was the female Masters winner. Jonette Anderson and Ann Simmons gained Grand and Senior Grand Masters awards. Debbie Chaney continued her winning ways in the race walk. David Chaney was the male winner in the walk. Ben Rowland was the first finisher in the one mile. Ray Martin and Phillip Wedgeworth also represented the Pine Belt Pacers at this event. The after-race refreshments were good and plentiful. We had fruit, cookies, pizza, water, and soft drinks. Okay a few people brought their own drinks that might have been more than soft. The Mississippi Track Club did a great job with this grand prix event. The course is somewhat challenging and the weather was very warm. Thanks to everyone who helped make this race a success. Adventurous people stayed for the parade and the Sweet Potato Queens.
