Over 250 people registered early for
the eleventh annual New Hope Family Enrichment 5K run/walk, but
the threat of bad weather kept some of those away. However, a
good number of hearty souls braved the rainstorm to
participate in the race. This was the first Mississippi
Track Club event since July 10, so a
lot of people were more than ready to run. I tried
to get Jack Ward to start the race early so I could keep
my string of over 450 races without
having ever started one in the rain, but it was
not to be. We had a very heavy down pour just before the
start of the race, and things didn't
let up too much until the race was over. The
course was somewhat challenging with one big hill and a
couple of small ones. At some points
water covered the road. By the end of the race, our shoes
weighed about five pounds each, and our clothes were much
heavier than when we started. None of that affected Chuck Engle
who took the early lead and easily won
the run. Larry Sykes was the winning race
walker. Phillip Wedgeworth and Antha Estridge drove from
Laurel to take the Grand Masters
honors. The drive home was worse since the rain was so
hard that we could barely see past the hood of my car.
The awards ceremony was moved inside
the church so that we would not all have to
stand in the rain. Watermelon, bananas, grapes, and
oranges served as the post-race
snacks. Much thanks to everyone who worked hard to make
this race a success. Results are linked to the
MTC web site.
