PINE HILL RUN
The Wiggins Pine Hills festival 5 and 10K run was held on Saturday, April 3, with several Pine Belt Pacers participating. Vicki Copeland, Martha Rae Sartor, Brandi Mixon, Burch Davis, Nestor Raul Anzola, Robin Ryder, Jerry Worley, Bob Clark, Richard Sims, and Phillip Wedgeworth represented the Pine Belt Pacers well. All of the Pacers placed and ran well. The courses for the 5K and 10K were totally different, which is unusual for races with multiple distances. Both courses featured many hills and more hills. The majority of the runners ran the 5K. Jerry Worley took the early lead and was only challenged once for a very short time by the third place finisher. Phillip Wedgeworth was able to take second place. Vicki Copeland was the first female finisher. Robin Ryder easily won the 10K, finishing almost ten minutes ahead of the second place Bob Clark. The after race snacks consisted of fruit and water. Several people won door prizes. Thanks to the people of Wiggins for putting on this race. Results: 1 Mile, 5K, 10K . © Phillip Wedgeworth
Just to put my gallant 2nd place finish in perspective. Robin was finished with the race when I went by the 5 mi. mark. I remember asking him his finish time and he said 36 something and I remembered going by the 5 mi. mark at 37:02. It was a great day to do a 10K and the course was quite challenging. Besides I'd whole lot rather come in 2nd than my 380th place at the AZT. © Bob Clark
Pine Hill Day Celebration Run Several Pine Belt Pacers took advantage of the menagerie of runs on April 3 in downtown Wiggins being held in conjunction with their Pine Hill/100th Anniversary Day. The wimps in the club (Phillip, Richard, Raul, Jerry, and Vicki) ran in the 5K. Jerry Worley and Vicki Copeland took top awards. Bob Clark, Robin Ryder, Brandy Mixon, Dawn Smith, and I competed in the 10K. Ryder took top honors for the men and Mixon and Smith tied for first in the women’s division. The rest of us placed either first or second in our divisions. There were about 15 youth who participated in the 1 mile. The 10K was scenic, hilly and very enjoyable to run. A sports beverage was served at the halfway point by a very hospitable host. At mile two a Great Dane guarding her two puppies provided lots of motivation to speed up. Miles three and four were the hilliest. Mile five ended in a scenic curve. The race ended where it started, at Blaylock Park. Big Level Grocery sponsored the refreshments. The lady who owns the grocery store served us sweet oranges, bananas, and water. She was a great hostess! Our race host, Brandy’s cousin, did a great job. The festival featured a 4-H Pettin’ Zoo, great food, and lots of local entertainment. I certainly would participate in this run again. Submitted by Martha Ray Sartor
