My partner Max Waldrup hurt
himself and I told him that if he stuck it out I would stick
with him till he finished, man was it a long day! Not to
mention the heat, I felt like a hotdog that’s been in the
store cooking all day when it was done! My hat is off to
anyone who runs these things and the organizers were great
bunch of guys and gals. Hope to see you all running, Mike
Woods
I "beat" Rob Apple only because he took the early 5:00
am start, and was therefore credited with 9 hours even
though he really ran in the 7.30 range (RD tries to
discourage folks from taking the early start unless
they'll take over 9 hours to run it).
I'm really pleased with my run, my second fastest of
seven Jims.
Next year I'm going for the pr :)

Thanks to Gary Cantrell for the great effort at the JIM this
year. Of
course LAZ, could never pull this JIM off without the support of
his
super family and the town folks behind him, LAZ has a lot going
for him.
It always feel good inside to see the JIM has been maintained
near it's
original concept and has survived for 26 years, so us gitting
older
runners may come and have our day in the sun, for "it is good to
run and
have fun in the sun", each year that we are able.
Robbie, Chris and I arrived around Supper time, the best time
from my
memories, that's when the work was done and everyone ate and
socialized.
This year the runners ate at the Wartrace community center, just
a short
walk from check-in near the square, catfish, pasta, and fixins
were the
choices, in a short 40 mile run best to pig out. This is an
original
quote from Supper, where Gary's Dad was, "No one ever knew Gary
had a
DAD", and what was the response from Gary's DAD? "He has a MOM
too", I
think that was the "classic" from the Supper. There was a lot
of
hugging of old friends that have stuck with this Ultra Running
sport for
so long, some stories of the ones we miss, and the opportunity
to greet
new Ultra friends. Grant Egley has a shot for a 1000 mile JIM
finish,
not far away.
Another, Classic Jim started at 7AM.
Guess what, the trains blocked the
tracks between the start and the finish, on Highway 64. Seems
like
Wartrace is a place where trains like or can pass, near 7AM. In
previous years, runners needed to be aware of the trains or risk
starting late, sometimes by 20-30 minutes, if they arrived from
the West
side of the tracks, Shelbyville, where lots of Ultra Runners
seek
creature comforts the night before JIM. In recent years, Gary
has
assumed control of even the trains schedule in WARTRACE, so the
tracks
were clear 5 minutes before the start.
Again, the Jim horses showed up to race and started out on a
cool cloudy
humid morning. No Jim runner should ever be deceived by weather
at the
start, the Jim is a real test of preparation and will. The
early hills
are tough, but are infrequent, 5.10,15,20, 25 and entice a
runner to a
fast pace, then a few long sections after hilltop downhill to
the walls,
from 25 to the walls the heat is turned up, no more cool cloudy
day,
which happened again this year. The horses always have the
advantage
because they git to miss most of the heat. The Walls appear
subtle and
easy on the profile, but are designed to take whatever is left
from that
speed run from Hilltop hill to 30 miles out of you, there is one
more
major hill at 30, so either you sacrifice in the sun or
sacrifice in the
Walls or sometimes both. If you git to 35 in good shape the
course is
just a fast 10K to the finish for the Horses.
Sub 5 hours gits you a gold shirt, sub six a blue shirt, sub 7 a
red
shirt, the rest git the house shirt, the ones that finish. It
is really
a fun time, I got the house shirt this time, but started with
the
horses, there is a trek start at 5AM, some less prepared opt for
that,
so they can git to the finish before all the chicken is gone.
LAZ likes
all to enjoy the pleasures of JIM, maybe trekkie next year.
Those shirts are a real goal, earned on the blacktop heat of
Wartrace,
even the RD has a blue one. Come join the fun.
