The twenty-second annual Victory Bowl 10K and 5K was held Saturday,
January 3, 2004 at Point Clear, Alabama with about 300 runners
participating. The vast majority ran the 10K. This seemed to be a family
event with many related people participating. Mississippi was well
represented with the Wheeler family, the Datlof family, the Fortenberrys
from Forest, the Collums; but the dominate family was from New Orleans.
Brendan Minihan Jr. blistered the course to win the 10K, and his father
Brendan Sr. easily won the Grand Masters. Not to be left out, sister
Margaret Ann Minihan won her age group. The 50-54 age group was taken by
Mississippians. Ed Wheeler was first, Phillip Wedgeworth was second and
Mike Datlof was third. Mike's wife Pam was second in her age group, and
Peggy Wedgeworth was the second overall race walker. This race is really
a weekend event. Friday night features a pre-race banquet. The Grand
Hotel in Point Clear is a great place to stay--especially with a rate of
$69.00 per night. The awards ceremony is held in the Grand Hotel main
ball room so that is a comfortable environment. The awards were quite
different from most. Most people got small wind chimes, and the others
got candle holders. And to end the weekend there is a post-race dance at
Darby's On the Point. The race is to raise money for St. Jude Children's
Research Hospital, and every year the race is dedicated to a cancer
victim, who is related to one of the runners. This year the race was
dedicated to Marilyn Barlow Emmons. Ms. Emmons' three sons, her husband,
and other family members traveled from Texas to participate in the run.
Willie Foster is in charge of the Victory Bowl run, and Lonn Spencer is
the race director. See results. This is a fun, laid back event that supports a
good cause. © Phillip Wedgeworth.   Entry form for the 2005 Victory Bowl.
