The 2004 Watermelon
Classic was held on July 3, in Jackson with about 900 people
participating. This race is normally held on July 4, but the
fourth is on Sunday this year, so it was moved to
Saturday. Nestor Anzola, Richard Sims,
Jerry Keywood, and Phillip Wedgeworth represented
the Pine Belt Pacers at this Mississippi Track Club Grand
Prix event. The weather was
threatening just before race time, but Jeff Wells put
the top up on his convertible, which insured that we
would get no rain. However the
humidity was still with us and the hills are always a factor
on this course. After a few instructions from Jack Ward,
MTC race director, Jack shot the gun and we were off running
down Lakeland Drive. Mike Thrailkill shot out to the early lead
and held it for about a half mile
before being caught by about five other guys. Mark Thorn took
first place followed by Chuck Egnles
and Rob Oates. Jim George was the Masters
winner and Tad Jurgens traveled from Monroe to take the
Grand Masters. Kristi Walski was the
female winner. Debbie Cheney continued her winning
ways in the race walk. After the race everyone had the
chance to enjoy cold watermelon, soft
drinks, bananas, and Gatoraid. For complete results see the
