Anderson Cup 5K |
The
twenty-second Anderson Cup 5K road race was held on
Saturday, April 16 in Meridian with 119 people finishing the
5K and many others doing the two-mile walk and the one-mile
fun run. Mike Thrailkill, the forty-one year old from
Decatur, had little trouble with the very hilly course and
won by beating Rob Oates, who won last week's Run for the
Roses in Prentiss. Mark Lipking ran forty-one seconds slower
than last week, but still managed to take the Masters award
with a time of 19:45. Rick Fontan from Collinsville was the
Grand Master winner with a 19:41. Brandy Gamblin was the
female winner. Nestor Anzola represented the Pine Belt
Pacers well by winning the race walk. Phillip Wedgeworth
placed in his age group to also represent the PBP. This race
was what is becoming typical of local races with thirteen of
the top twenty-five finishers being over 40, including the
winner and the third place finisher. And to make things more
interesting, six of those thirteen top twenty-five finishers
were over 50. This is about as hard of a course as Meridian
has to offer with the last half mile or more being up hill.
One of the best features of this race is the use of the
showers in the Anderson wellness center. The after-race food
was plentiful and there were more door prizes than one
normally sees at a race, but I was able not to win any of
those. Thanks to the Meridian people who put this race.
