On September 17, 2005, about three weeks after Hurricane Katrina, five Pine Belt Pacers took on the streets of Magee to participate in the YMCA Crazy Day 5K Run. Chuck Gatzman, Phillip Wedgeworth, Nestor Raul Anzola, Burtch Davis and Martha Ray Sartor represented the club with distinction. The cooler temperature was a refreshing change from the previous hot, humid early morning weather. The City of Magee had worked tirelessly to remove the debris from the city streets to be able to provide this 5K run and the festival that followed for the citizens and visitors. The course was slightly hilly. Refreshments afterwards of bananas and water were appreciated. The race t-shirt was brown with a green and yellow design. The design may be a picture of Hurricane Katrina or modern art, not sure. There were probably about 25 participants give or take a few. All five took home trophies. Because I am so late in writing this report, I cannot remember how everyone placed. What I do remember was that we were all fast and looked good, particularly Phillip, who continues his image update in his new running shorts. I am still having problems with the new, shorter length. How much of Phillips legs do you really need to see? Report Submitted by Martha Ray Sartor.
