The thirteenth
annual Homeport Causeway Classic was held in Pascagoula on
July 16, with about 100 people participating in the 5K and
one-mile run. The weather was extremely hot and humid with a
strong wind hitting us in the face for the last mile and
half. This was the hottest race that I have been in all
year. After a few instructions, Max Lemons blew the starting
horn and we were off. Zachary Wallick took the early lead,
but Leonard Vergunst passed him within the first half miles
and cruised to the win with a time of 17:42, which is rather
slow for Leonard, but the heat and wind may have affected
him as it did the rest of us.
Roheem Moore was second and after the race said that it was
just like last year with Leonard winning and Roheem coming
in second. Maybe we have a tradition going here. Maureen
Koch was the first female finisher. David Jeffrey traveled
over from Semmes, Alabama to take the Masters award. The
female Masters was Jeanne Quesenberry. Phillip Wedgeworth
got the Grand Masters, and Lu Jeffrey was the female Grand
Masters winner. The Pine Belt Pacers were also represented
by Bob Clark who won his age group and Ron Williams who
placed in his age group. Chuck
Gatzman also traveled down from Laurel and ran well. Some of
the great things about this race include showers, an indoor
air conditioned place for the awards, and plenty of food and
drink. This may have been the last Causeway Classic since
the Navy Base is on the list of base closings. The Gulf
Coast Running Club did a great job with this race as they do
with all of their races. Completer results are found on the
Gulf Coast
Running Club Web page.
