The 33rd annual
Day in the Park race was held on May 7, with about 80 people
running in the 5K and about 50 running in the one-mile.
After a few instructions and announcements from Bill
McMullan and a prayer by the Reverend Stan Runnels, we were
off. The course is a very challenging run through the
beautiful, historic district of Laurel. There are several
hills to make things interesting.
Bryan Daniels was the overall winner beating the second place finisher and Masters winner, Jim Cigelski. If Jim's last name is spelled wrong, I copied it from the results page and besides he should have an easier to spell name. Joni Dunbar was the female winner. Diane Thames returned to racing and took the Masters award. Caleb Martin, Ike Armour, and Justin Hill were the 0-12 age winners. The females in that age group were Mary Parker, Emily Armour, and Stephanie Ellzey. In the 13-19 age group Johnson Marcellin, Micah Green and Bretty Perry were the male winners. The females were Chelsy Chittenden, Chynna Carmichael, and Syzannah Martin. In the 20-29 males, the winners were Ben Pace, Brendon Hollingsworth, and T.C. Owens. The female winners in that age group were Jenny Peck, Mandy Stevens, and Aubrey Shaw. In the 30-39 age, the winners were Scott Pierson, Matt Smith, and Barry Beard. The female winners in that age were Delecia Wook, Leigh Ann Fletcher, and Crystal Dupre. In the 40-49 age, the winners were Ray Martin, Les Rodgers and Marty Leggett. The females in that age were Beverly Martin, Ann Barrow, and Winnie Hollingsworth. In the 50-59 age group the winners were Phillip Wedgeworth, Mickey Robinson, and Caley Hawkins. The female winner in that age was Sandra Wargel. In the 60+ age group, the winners were Jerry Luftin, Ed Walker, and Mobby Overstreet. Shannon Holder was the female winner in that age. The first three male on-milers were Jeremiah Marcellino, Hunter Myrick, and Evan Buckley. The first three female one-milers were Lydia Martin, Elisabeth Scott, and Emily Miller. It was good to see some of the regulars and to see some new runners today. It was also great to see the return of a few runners who have been missing in action for a while. Les Rodgers was back after a long absence as were Diane Thames and Jenny Peck. Joe Gunter was present for moral support and to help with the photography. The next local race is at Kamper Park in Hattiesburg next Saturday, May 14, at 7:30. Many thanks to Celeste, Ashely, and Bill for working hard to put on a great race © Phillip Wedgeworth
