The annual Meridian Athletic Association Jingle Bell 5K Run/Walk and one-mile fun run was held on December 3, with a fairly good group of participants considering the threatening weather. When I left Laurel, the temperature was about 54 with no wind, but by the time I got to Meridian, the wind had picked up to about 15-20 mph, and a light rain started a few minutes before race time. Luckily the rain stopped, but the wind didn't let up. After a few instructions, we were off. Yousri Elmejdouli took the early lead to pace his protégé, Corey Rigdon. Mike Thrailkill was very close behind the first two runners. Cory won a second ahead of Yousri at 16:16, and Mike came in third with a good time of 16:31. Kerri Lagendyk was the first female finisher. James Johnson and Julia Marshall were the Masters winners, and Mike Neal and Georgia Walker were the Grand Masters winners. Larry Sykes and Curtis Fancher were the first two male race walkers, and Sheila Newbaker and Laurel's own Betsy Ivey were the first two female race walkers. This was Betsy's first attempt at a race walk event. Hopefully she will enjoy many more. Crescent City Grill provided the after-race food, and Sanders Gas provided heaters to keep us warm. This is always a well organized and well run event. Thanks for all of the hard work that went into making this a successful run. See Complete Results.
