The Mississippi Marathon run/walk, 10K run and 5K walk was held on Saturday, January 15 2005 at the Natchez Trace Parkway at Clinton, Mississippi. Dennis Bisnette, Randy Saxon, and I left Laurel at 5:00 a.m. and picked up Iva Lightsey in Taylorsville before proceeding to the marathon. This was the warmest temperature that we have had in the last six years that I have gone to this event. The temp was about 34 when the race started at 8:00 and a little cooler when the race walkers and a few runners started at 7:00. After a few instructions from race director, Jack Ward, we were all off. Leonard Vergunst came up from the coast to win the marathon. Being from the coast, Leonard didn't know that we normally wear shirts when it is this cold, but he warmed up fast enough. Jim George, running with a stress fracture, slowed down, but still took second and won the Masters award. Larry Lichnovsky traveled from Arlington, Texas to win the Grand Masters. Kimberly Whitman was the first female finisher, Rebecca Wright was the Masters winner, and Moselle's own Doris Burns won the Grand Masters. Nathan Tarver and Carly Dessauer were the male and female winners in the 10K run. Retired English Professor Nancy Dykes was the first race walker to finish the 5K walk. Of our quartet from the Pine Belt, Randy Saxon and Iva Lightsey both placed in their age groups. I don't have many pictures because I gave my camera to someone before the race and asked that person to take as many pictures as possible of the start of the race and of finishers, but that didn't happen. After the race we had pizza, fruit, soft drinks, and water. Much thanks to all of the MTC people who worked so hard to make this marathon a success.  See Complete results
