The annual New Hope Baptist Church Family Enrichment 5K Run/Walk was held on Saturday, August 20, with a good crowd participating in the very hot weather. The temperature in Laurel at 4:00 a.m. was 77 and the heat factor was 86, so we knew that we were in for a hot race today. After arriving at race site, we registered and warmed up. I knew that the course was a hard one, but the rather large dog that barked at us and acted as if he needed breakfast bothered me a little. Finally the traffic was stopped and Jack Ward was ready to shoot the starting gun and get us going. Several people started very fast in the heat and faded. Mark Lipking was able to win his second race in the last couple of weeks. Kristi Walski was the female winner, which is getting to be a habit with her. Charles and Miriam Allred made if a family affair with the Masters awards. Mike Neal traveled over from Meridian to win the Grand Masters and Cathy Ward was the female Grand Masters winners. The Pine Belt Pacers were well represented with Chuck Gatzman, Ray Martin and Phillip Wedgeworth all getting first in their age groups. In addition to the run, the New Hope Church sponsored a health fair, where we could get our cholesterol, blood pressure, body fat, glucose level, and many other things checked. Just in case you are wondering, my blood pressure is normal, my cholesterol is 150, and my body fat is way too much at 18%. After the good reading on cholesterol, I enjoyed the refreshments of watermelon, grapes, muffins, soft drinks, and water. This is a great event for a good cause. Thanks to everyone who helped make it a success. Complete results can be found on the MTC web page.
