STEAM WHISTLE 12K RUN/WALK

Clyde ~ Epley~ Clyde

Over 70 people showed up at Clyde today to start the New Year off on their right foot, and either ran or walked on the Longleaf Trace, or cheered on their runners. The event covered the almost 4 miles from the extinct sawmill town of Clyde to another extinct sawmill town, Epley, and returned to Clyde. The unseasonably mild temperature, with low fog/clouds to keep the sun off made running pleasant. As a result, almost all the runners reported setting a new PR (personal record i.e. best time ever for the distance). After the run everyone enjoyed some traditional New Years day food (peas, cabbage, and corn bread).

Unique trophies beautifully hand crafted by the race director Tony Mozingo were awarded to the top 3 runners in each age group. Nice door prizes donated by Soccer Locker, Hattiesburg Coca-Cola, Dandy Dan's, Southern Bone and Joint, and Mississippi Oil were awarded by random drawing.

Max Lemmons was first overall, and Kim Ryder was first overall woman

Dr. John Harsh was one of the sponsors, and won an age group award

People came from 7 states and Louisiana to this first annual event. Over $700 was raised to benefit educational projects on the Longleaf Trace.

Pine Belt Pacer Tony Mozingo presented Longleaf Trace Trail Manager Herlon Pierce with a $700 check on 2/7/05. The check was the result of money raised from the Steam Whistle 12K, held New Year's Day on the Trace, which Tony directed.
