Phillip will send you the official
report and pictures for
the "Pearl Day 5K". I'm just going to
make some
additional comments. We had a great time in the Pearl Day 5K. Since the race started at 7:30am, we had nice conditions during the event, sunny sky and temperatures in the 70's. The Pine Belt Pacers were represented by Phillip Wedgeworth, Ray Martin, Becky and Hollie Ryder, Nestor Raul Anzola, and Larry Sykes. Everyone ran or walked great and enjoyed eating watermelons, cookies, bananas, and Gatorade after the race. See complete results on the MSTC site. In the 5K run, Phillip placed first in his age category; Ray ran very well today, but he was in the toughest age group (45-49). Becky got the trophy for the top GrandMasters. Larry Sykes was the winner of the 5K walk in 31:01. I finished second, 8 seconds behind Larry and got the award for first place in the Masters category. Hollie placed first in his age group in the 5K Walk. If the measure of the course was right, I got a new PR for the distance (31:10!) breaking the previous one for more than one minute (?). The Pearl Day 5K run/walk was held
on Saturday, June 25 with one of the smaller crowds for a
Mississippi Track Club event; however, the fast guys showed
up and ran well. This race started at 7:30 which made for
cooler conditions than the usual 8:00 start. After a few
instructions from race director, Jack Ward, we were off.
Scott Pulliam took the early lead, but he couldn't hold it.
The race came down to the last tenth of a mile when Lloyd
Gray took control and won by eight seconds over forty-one
year old Mike Thrailkill, who was the Masters winner.
Yolanda Brown, who has improved greatly lately, was the
female winner. Miriam Allred was the female Masters winner.
Al Waddell and Becky Ryder took the Grand Masters honors.
Larry Sykes and Donna Gonzales were the winners in the race
walk. Nestor Anzola and Elizabeth Howard were the Masters
winners in the race walk, and Jim Myrick and Martha Keenum
were the Grand Masters winners. The Pine Belt Pacers were
well represented. In addition to Nestor and Becky, Phillip
Wedgeworth got first in his age group and Holly Ryder won
his age group in the race walk. Ray Martin did well, but he
ran in probably the toughest age group at this race. After
the race everyone enjoyed watermelon, soft drinks, cookies,
and fruit. The door prizes were also very good.
Thanks to the MTC for putting on this quality race.
The next MTC event is the Watermelon Classic on July 4. It
is also a 7:30 start and usually about 700 people show up to
run in the heat and hills. © Phillip Wedgeworth.
