The second annual Rush to Brush, sponsored by the Mississippi Dental School was held on the campus of the Mississippi Medical School on Saturday, February 19, with a good group of runners and walkers. The race started at 9:00 a.m. with the threat of rain, but we were able to run the very hilly and difficult course without getting wet. The race was a three man contest for first place. Eighteen year old Mississippi State student John Nevels held the lead for the first two miles, but then Mike Thrailkill decided to take control and easily won the event. Rob Oates was second and Nevels fell to third. It was amusing after the race when I asked who won, and I was told that "the old guy won." Being much older than Mike Thrailkill, I have always thought of him as a young man. I guess it is all just a matter of perspective; however, the old guys seem to do well in most races. Carly Deassauer was the winning female. Miriam Alred continued her winning ways by taking the female masters award. Terrell Knight was the male masters. Luckily all of the fast old guys stayed home, so Phillip Wedgeworth of Laurel won the Grand Masters, and Donna Andrews was the female Grand Masters winner. Nick Kendall and Kay Moseley were the winners in the Race Walk. The after race events were as pleasant as can be found anywhere. We were inside a modern, comfortable gym, which had shower facilities for us to use. Refreshments were provided by McAlister's, which is one of the major sponsors. The door prizes were plentiful and nice. This was another well organized and well run race put on by the Mississippi Track Club. Much thanks to Jack, Jim and all of the volunteers who work so hard to make these races happen.
