Soil Stewardship in the Pass

What a great week. Starting Sun. a Biathlon and ending Sat. with a 5K in Pass Christian. The 5k in the Pass was on our usual 5K course. The weather was cause for alarm with lighting and rain. I like a lot of other folks decided that since the weather was threatening. not many would show up and thus giving me a better chance to win a trophy. A trophy in this case is a tree or bush of some sort. Which is a good thing since my wife makes me take any hardware I accumulate over a period of time out to a milk crate in the storage shed. Bushes and trees I get to put in the yard and admire every time I mow and weedeat around them. The only thing is on my trophies and plaques I write my time on the back or on the bottom. This is hard to do on the root ball of a plant.

Anyway we lined up for the start and Leonard warned us not to run over the Photo person when we took off. As usual somebody didn't listen and I heard the sound of a camera hitting the ground and heard the scrambling of feet getting out of the way. The 1st mile is slightly up hill and I had my friend Mike Denton hanging on my shoulder pushing -pulling me along far faster than I wonted to go. We seesawed back and forth till we made the turn on the beach. He let me have the lead on Scenic drive. I think he wonted me to take the head wind thus tiring me out for the finish. I managed to hold the lead and the 1st woman slipped in between us. I also took great pains to make sure my Garmin forerunner was all charged up for the race. It's a great running accessory. It automatically logs mile splits and tells you your pace and when you get home it will download into your computer. It will even give you a map of the course. All this will take place if you turn it on and start it when the race starts. A half a mile from the finish. I checked to see how I was doing and saw that I had failed to start it.  I did finish in 16th place and like the rest of the participants will have to wait till Leny post the results on the web site. After the race the skies opened up and we were all told to grab a bush and check the results on the web site. I did manage to choke down some of Abita Springs water and Toucans food and Gatorade. © Bob Clark
