The tenth annual Laurel
Fire Department / Mainstreet
Festival Toys for Tots 5K, which is
now a Pine Belt Pacer Gran Prix event, was held on November
5 with a fairly good group of runners. After a few
instructions from long time race director Kerri Holifield,
we were off. Keith Barrett and Richie Sumrall ran side by
side for most of the race, and then Richie pulled away for
the win. Keith finished a close second with Gary Filpi and
Phillip Wedgeworth coming in third and fourth. To make the
race a complete Sumrall affair, Audrey Jackson was the first
female. This is the first time that two people from Sumrall
were the winners of this race. It may be the first time that
two runners from Sumrall competed in this race. Keith
Barrett and Nadine Archuleta were the Masters winners, and
Phillip Wedgeworth and Sheri Dykes took Grand Masters
honors. Jessica McGee was the only female in the 15-19 age
group. Chrissy Herrington and Brandy Windham were the 25-29
female winners. Beverly Stevens was the only 30-34 female.
Mary Garcia Lori Plumlee, and Leigh Ann Fletcher were the
35-39 age winners. Deborah Barrett and Miriam Rosales were
the 40-44 winners. Shannon Holder won her age group. As far
as the males are concerned, Keghan Livingston and Robert
Mozingo were the under 14 winners. John Oliver, Keith Hilpi,
and Mike Boyd took the 30-34 age group. Matt Smith and Stan
Livingston were the 35-39 winners. Gary Filpi, Tony Mozingo,
and Jorge Garcia won the 40-44 age group. Ray Martin and
Robert Hartzog were the 45-49 winners. Caley Hawkins took
honors in the 50-54 age group. Kent Headrick was the 55-59
winner, and Moby Overstreet and Jeff Troyka took the over 60
honors. This was a well-organized race with lots of support
from both the LFD and LPD, who kept the course safe for all
of the runners. After the race, we had fruit, water, Subway
sandwiches, and lots of good fellowship. Much thanks to
everyone who worked hard to put this run on. Everyone needs
to go ahead and mark the calendar for the first Saturday in
November for next year.
