Sumrall 0:15.5 0:31 2 More than 30 runners braved the heat and humidity Thursday evening to participate in the last of four Trek the Trace events held at the Longleaf Trace in June. For the first time we had two runners, Dave Beckett and Steve Phillips, nail their predictions. Dave finished in 13:45 and Steve’s prediction of 14:10 not only was right on the money, it lifted him into the money. In three Trek the Trace events, Steve was only a total of 28 seconds off of his predictions for an average of 9.3 seconds off. He edged Deb Osteen by fractions of a second for the grand prize of a free pair of shoes courtesy of Soccer Locker & City Runners. Deb, who also participated in three of the four events, was a total of 29 seconds off of her predictions. Participants were required to compete in at least three of the four Trek the Trace events to be eligible for the grand prize. A total of 22 did so, with five participating all four weeks. Close to 60 runners and walkers participated in at least one event, with the final three events averaging about 35 participants. The big winners, aside from Steve, turned out to be everyone who stuck around after the event. Ibrahim was kind enough to bring four students from Healing Touch for some post race stretching and massaging. And of course, as always, there was plenty of food. Thank you so much to all who participated. We will have a similar series beginning Thursday, Sept. 8 at 6:30 p.m., and continuing each Thursday evening through Sept. 29. Each event will be 5K. The 5K series, as usual, will lead up to the HubFest 5K, which will be held at Kamper Park on Oct. 8. Also please make a note of the upcoming Gran Prix event in Laurel on Sept. 3 – the Band of Braves 5K. In addition, please keep in mind the businesses that help support the club’s activities. The Friends of the Longleaf Trace are always looking for new members. Membership information can be found on the Web site http://www.longleaftrace.org/ . Keep in mind the Trace allows us to set up free of charge for our Thursday night events. Soccer Locker & City Runners can help you with all of your running and walking needs. Currently, they have a host of running apparel and shoes on sale. You can visit Yousri and Mostafa at their Highway 98 location just west of Wal-Mart. Healing Touch offers $25 student massages. Call (601) 261-0111 to set up an appointment. Again, thanks to all who participated in Trek the Trace. June 16 Pictures:
June 9: Thirteen runners and walkers (and of course some additional eaters) attended the first in a series of four predicted time 2-mile runs Thursday, June 9, at the Longleaf Trace. Runners and walkers called their shots, removed their watches, and trekked one mile out and back from the Trace’s Gateway Pavilion. Jim Coll topped the field racing home just two seconds under his predicted time of 11:55. Coll edged Deb Osteen, who was eight seconds faster than her predicted mark of 12:15. Of note, Robert Mozingo turned in a personal best 18:48, easily dispatching of the “washed-up” (See Lamar County 5K report) Keith Barrett in the first half-mile, then pulling away from Dawn Smith in the final 200 meters. To his credit, Barrett was able to take the lead in the Men’s Open Division of the Gran Prix Series. In addition, at the next three events, I would like to take up small donations to pass along to the Friends of the Longleaf Trace on behalf of the club. Keep in mind, we are able to set up at the pavilion at no cost (this would not be the case at other facilities). Certainly this is not something that you would be required to do to participate in the series, I just believe it would be a nice gesture on the club’s part. And while I’m on the subject of donations, my congratulations goes out to each of you for your help in making a difference in our community. As you have probably noticed, HubFest race director Keith Barrett presented $1,200 to the Muscular Dystrophy Association recently. The funds were the result of our efforts at October’s HubFest. Next Thursday at the predicted time run, we’ll be presenting $455 to Southern Miss Head Track and Field Coach Wayne Williams, the result of the Pine Belt Pacer Relays. And don’t forget just a few months ago, Tony Mozingo presented a check of $700 to the Longleaf Trace, the result of the Steam Whistle 12K. That is three major donations in the span of a few months, and something everyone involved in the Pine Belt Pacers should take pride in. Thanks to all of you who participated in the first predicted time run; look forward to seeing all of you next week. I am pleased to announce that Soccer Locker & City Runners has pledged a new pair of shoes to the series’ champion. To be eligible to win, you must participate in at least three of the four events. Winner will be determined by average time off of predictions. Good luck to all.
Jim
